Using Fetch
to Send/Receive Files

This tutorial will guide you step by step through configuring Fetch to exchange files between your Macintosh computer and Steven Label's FTP site. In order to follow along with us, you'll need to have Fetch downloaded and installed, and you'll need to be connected to the internet via your ISP or online service provider. You'll also need to have a User ID, Password, and Directory name from our customer service.

Step 1 - Download Fetch

If you haven't already done so, please download Fetch and install it on your computer. This is a compressed file, so you will need a decompression utility to unstuff it. (If you do not have one, please visit Aladdin System's Site and download one now).

Step 2 - Open Fetch and create a New Connection.

Once you open Fetch, the first screen you will see is the New Connection screen, which will look similar to this:

New Connection

1. You'll need to enter the following settings:

  • Host:  ftp.stevenlabel.com
  • User ID:  (Type your ID here)*
  • Password:  (Type your Password here)*
  • Directory:  (Type your Cartoon_Name here)*

    * You'll need to get these from customer service

2. Click OK and you'll be logged onto your own private FTP Directory on Steven Label's server (no one else will be able to open or see what is in there unless they have the correct ID and password).

NOTE: If you wish, you may choose to save your New Connection as a "Shortcut" so that you don't have to enter it each time you log in with Fetch. If you wish to use this time saving feature, click on 'Customize' on the Menu Bar, select 'New Shortcut...' from the drop-down window, and you'll see the following window:

New Shortcut

Enter the following information and then click OK:

  • Name:  (Type a Reference Name here -- eg. "Steven Label FTP")
  • Type:  Folder
  • Host:  ftp.stevenlabel.com
  • User ID:  (Type your ID here)*
  • Password:  (Type your Password here)*
  • Directory:  (Type your Cartoon_Name here)*

The next time you want to log on, when the New Connection box comes up, click on the arrow next to "Shortcuts", select your Company name, and (presto!) all the information will be filled in for you.

Step 3 - Transferring Files Back and Forth

Now that you are logged into Steven Label's FTP site, the Fetch screen should look similar to this:

Logged into FTP

The window displays the files in YOUR directory and all the directories on Steven Label's FTP site. You'll only be able to access your (CartoonName) directory.

  • To transfer files TO US, simply click once on the "Put File..." button, find the file you wish to send & click "Open", name the file, then click "OK".

  • To get files FROM US, simply click once on the "Get File..." button, click on the file you wish to download, find where you want to place it & click "Save".
Tips & Suggestions

1. The Password is case sensitive

  • Use ALL CAPS.
  • The Directory (Cartoon character) name is NOT case sensitive . . . but it does need to be typed in exactly as given to you. If your name is "joe_smoe", typing "joesmoe" (without a space) or "joe smoe" (with a space), will not connect you to your directory because you need to use an underscore line (SHIFT+dash key).
2. When sending artwork, keep Filenames to eight characters long maximum.
  • Name your file up to 8 characters long BEFORE the extension. For example: call your Adobe Illustrator file "987654E.ai" intead of "Label_987654_Rev_E.ai"
  • Please use the appropriate extension (even though it's not necessary); it helps us know what program it was created in.
3. After downloading a file please delete it from your directory.
  • Keep your directory "clean" by deleting those files that you download. This will help you keep track of which are new files and which are files you've already downloaded before.

Step 4 - Ending Your FTP Session

To disconnect from Steven Label's FTP site, click on 'File' on the Menu Bar, then choose 'Quit' from the drop-down window. The next time you connect with Fetch, IF you created a "Shortcut" your New Connection information is already saved for you. Simply click on the arrow next to "Shortcuts", select the Reference Name, and all the information is filled in for you. Click OK to connect.
