Adobe Acrobat 8.0
PC Extension: .pdf

Files created in this format are (usually) not intended to be used as actual artwork. Portable Document Files (PDF) are made so that people can VIEW the artwork even if they don't have the original software program that created it. You can supply the PDF to us in its native format but we will NOT use it as art. We will import the file into a vector-based graphic program but sometimes things change and shift around (especially the fonts). If possible, get a hold of the file that the artwork was originally created in before it was made into a PDF.

In any case, please send us a printout of the artwork from your computer. This allows us to check and see what you're seeing and what you're expecting to get from us.

Adobe Illustrator CS3 Second Choice
PC Extension: .ai

This is an object orientated, vector-based program. If you don't have CorelDRAW or FreeHand, then this is our next program of choice. Give us the artwork in its native format as an Adobe Illustrator file. Change the Output Attribute resolution to 2540 dpi. Supply all the placed and linked graphics. Send all fonts used or convert text to outlines to ensure that the label will print the same as what you see on your screen.

In any case, please send us a printout of the artwork from your computer. This allows us to check and see what you're seeing and what you're expecting to get from us.

Adobe Photoshop CS3
PC Extension: .psd

This is a raster (not vector) based program in which all artwork is converted to pixels and are bitmapped. These files are usually placed or imported into other programs such as QuarkXPress or Adobe Illustrator. Give us the artwork in its native format as a Photoshop file (.psd), as a Photoshop EPS (.eps), or as a TIFF (.tif) with a 300 dpi resolution and a 1:1 scale or proportionally larger (not smaller).
  • If the image is to be printed in 4-color process, save the art in CMYK Mode (not RGB or Index Color).
  • If the image is to be printed as Black & White line art, save the art in Bitmap Mode (not Greyscale).
  • If the image is to be printed as a B/W Photo, save the art in Greyscale Mode.
In any case, please send us a printout of the artwork from your computer. This allows us to check and see what you're seeing and what you're expecting to get from us.

AutoCAD 2000
PC Extension: .dwg, .dxf, .igs

This is a great program to design & create the housings, product parts and blueprints for labels, but it is not a good program to make artwork. We will use the native file to get the label size, shape, position of cutouts & LED windows, and general layout of text, but we won't use it to generate actual artwork. We have AutoCAD 2000 and the Autodesk IGES Translator release 14.3, but we have found that if you save the file as an AutoCAD R12 Drawing (.dwg), or export it as an AutoCAD R12 DXF (.dxf) or Metafile (.wmf), that we have the least amount of problems when importing them into a vector-based program.

If you will be sending us an actual plotted blueprint (by mail or fax) along with the electronic file, then it is not necessary to send us the "full blueprint" electronic file (with all the notes and border). Just send us the label "art" without all the dimensions and callouts (since they are already on the blueprint anyway), and for the areas that have solid fills, don't use cross-hatching, just give us the outline of the shape and we will fill it in with the appropriate color. Unless you have a specific font that you wish to use, we will use a type style that's not exactly, but looks similar to the blueprint. Any imported graphics or logos need to be supplied separately along with the main file.

In any case, please send us a printout of the artwork from your computer. This allows us to check and see what you're seeing and what you're expecting to get from us.

BarTender 6.12
PC Extension: .btw

This is a program that creates barcodes. We can use your file for the actual barcode, text, and settings, but we will import it into a vector-based program for output. We will use it mainly for layout and general appearance only.

In any case, please send us a printout of the artwork from your computer. This allows us to check and see what you're seeing and what you're expecting to get from us.

CorelDRAW 11.0
PC Extension: .cdr

This is an object orientated, vector-based program. Give us the artwork in its native format as a CorelDRAW file. Supply all the imported and linked graphics (even if already embedded). Send all fonts used or convert text to curves to ensure that the label will print the same as what you see on your screen.

One of the problems we see when people supply us Corel files is that the Black color is not really Black. Sometimes they will import a graphic from Macintosh created art and the Black is actually "CMYK255 Black." This is a problem because when we output film, it comes out as a halftone screen percentage of Black (this also happens with "RGB Black" and "Pantone Black"). Use the default Custom Colors Black (which is actually "CMYK Black"). Another thing to look out for are Line weights that are too thin. The default for Corel is a Hairline thickness (which is .003"). This may print out fine on your laser printer, but when we output to film, there is much weeping and gnashing of teeth from our pressmen. Make the line thickness a minimum of .008" on a white background and .01" if it will be reversed out of a dark background.

In any case, please send us a printout of the artwork from your computer. This allows us to check and see what you're seeing and what you're expecting to get from us.
